Born in a time when everything was but skin deep
Having the advantage of having light skin you were able to pass under the radar
Though black within
Your appearance said differently
An icon during the Harlem Renaissance
Many criticized you over your decisions
Said you abandoned your roots
In exchange for the life of a white
But you paid no attention to such things
No one is perfect
Then why should they judge you?
Many did the same because it was a way to get ahead
And although it was a lie
It worked to your advantage nonetheless
You had success both in African American and American literature
A privilege not many were granted
Creating ‘Cane’ you became recognized
Having been in Georgia
It inspired you to write about your writings
Thus, the coming of ‘Cane’
‘A Certain Man’ another of your works
Dealt with the desire of a man
To do the right thing yet having fear stop him from taking action
But you aside from just writing about race
You wanted to unite the races
This is when you found interest in Unitism
A religion where harmony was reached within oneself through yoga
There were no boundaries here
Something that America had no tolerance for
It was either Black or White
No middle line
Your passion was so much that you created ‘The Wayward and the Seeking’
From there, stringing along many other works regarding this same issue
So unlike other writers of your time, you took another direction
Was it wrong?
Who was to say?
The fact of the matter was you were an amazing writer
Whom because of your talent, was recognized
There was no color in the mix with your fame
For you yourself said
You are an individual above the boundaries of race.
